Many people notice their teeth moving over time, and one day realise that their teeth don’t align like they used to.
Misaligned and crooked teeth are extremely common in people of all ages and can grow to become overlapped or twisted. This can occur for a number of reasons. The jaw bone not forming properly, genetics, personal habits such as nail biting and other oral health conditions such as thumb sucking. As the years go on, crooked teeth tend to get worse making treatment a lot more complicated. Cleaning them can become difficult, leading to tartar (calculus) build up, decay (cavities), and gum disease.
If you have a misaligned bite or crooked teeth, we recommend looking into your treatment options to straighten and align them. In the long term they’ll become easier to clean, meaning you can better maintain a healthy smile.

Leaving your crooked teeth untreated can lead to functional and psychological problems down the track. These include:
Further tooth movement/bite changes
Many people don’t realise our teeth are actually constantly moving throughout life. Any underlying bite issues are likely to continue and further deteriorate.
Reduced chewing and function
Eating your favourite foods may become challenging. Though, this does depend on the misalignment. Crooked teeth may also cause the development of minor speech impediments.
It could become difficult to bring your teeth together and jaw pain may result as the muscles become strained.
There are many studies linking crooked teeth, underbites, bucky teeth, and similar conditions with increased levels of school and workplace teasing, bullying, depression, and anxiety. Also crooked teeth may make it harder to enjoy meals.
Gum disease & tooth decay
Crooked teeth can create a difficult surface to clean. When overcrowding occurs it’s difficult to maintain good oral hygiene. As the tooth surfaces are harder to reach with your toothbrush, bristles and flossing is more awkward.

We’ll be able to move your teeth into the right spot using our teeth straightening treatment, Invisalign. Invisalign is a clear aligner treatment used as an alternative to metal fixed braces. Clear trays are placed over the teeth, and as we move from tray to tray over time, the teeth will slowly move into their final position. Clear aligners like Invisalign are comfortable, easy to keep clean, and virtually invisible (especially compared to traditional braces). Invisalign is an amazing technology. Many people notice their teeth moving over time, and one day realize that their teeth don’t align like they used to. This is normal and happens to everyone. Over time our teeth shift and rotate, especially the front teeth. Genetics are a factor, as well as the presence of missing teeth, wisdom teeth, and chipped or broken teeth. All of these can cause changes to your bite and affect the way your teeth come together.
Yes, 100%. When we have missing teeth or teeth in the wrong position, air gaps are created. This means that when we speak, our tongue will tend to rest in that gap and push air through, affecting the way we pronounce certain words. Missing front teeth will affect what we call our fricative sounds (f and th), which are the sounds that we make by pushing our tongue to the front. This can lead to lisping which makes it difficult to pronounce words such as “fifty” and “soup”.

The answer is yes. Often when our teeth are misaligned, stress is placed onto the jaw bone. This extra stress and pressure placed onto the jaw bone can cause tension, leading to headaches. To prevent these headaches from constantly recurring, check in with the team at Studio Smiles. We’ll be able to consult you through the solutions we can offer. Yes. Aging can have an effect on the alignment of our teeth but clenching and grinding over time, tooth loss, and any jaw changes are a few other reasons this could occur.
There are many different ways to treat misaligned or crooked teeth, but every case is unique. Here are two treatments we use at Studio Smiles to fix crooked teeth.
A popular modern treatment, Invisalign is the best way to fix crooked teeth without the need for metal braces. It involves a series of clear trays made with an amazing 3D technology to help your teeth come into their new position, completely pain free. The length of your treatment will solely depend on the amount of tooth movement required, however teeth are generally straightened within 6-12 months on average. Porcelain (Ceramic) Veneers
A fantastic option for those wanting a perfect smile, ceramic porcelain veneers are thin, ultra-strong, tooth-shaped porcelain shells that bond directly over your natural teeth. Porcelain (ceramic) veneers can mask mild and moderate misalignment, while also improving the colour, shape, and size of your teeth. In only 2-4 weeks, porcelain veneers will change your smile, allowing you to feel more confident than ever before. Dr. Sabrina Escuza
Dr. Sabrina Escuza takes great pride in providing a calm environment where patients feel safe to express their needs, and comfortable to ask questions. Empowering you to take control of your oral health journey is her number one priority. She will thoroughly explain your conditions, how they came to be, and what treatment options are available to meet your health or aesthetic goals. Each patient is unique, and she will strategically tie all the aspects of dentistry into an individual journey that will work best for you. It doesn’t matter if it’s a check up, or a complete change that you’re seeking – she will look after you.
Florida, USA is where home is for Dr. Sabrina. She received her Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of Florida (Go Gators!), and her Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Melbourne, where she graduated with honours and an achievement award from the prestigious Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity. Eight years of uni has made her addicted to education – she is fluent in Spanish, has studied philosophy and French, and now spends her free time learning about the most modern dental treatment modalities through continued professional development courses.
Dr. Sabrina finds great joy in the intersections of dentistry – healthcare and artistry, function/aesthetics and mental health, communication and comfort. She is meticulous with the design of a smile, considering everything from the physics of your bite to the color of the porcelain. One of her favorite areas is where surgery meets prosthetics – sometimes losing a very broken down tooth means creating a healthy space for a beautiful replacement that will get you eating without pain and smiling without shame.
Apart from dentistry, Sabrina (not so) secretly thinks she is a master chef, and can be found trying to feed her friends the excessive amount of food she cooks. She loves music, a good picnic in the sun, and her dog, Nile.
